FRPN Webinar - Inside the Black Box Part 2:
Fathers’ Attendance in Fatherhood Programs

The Fatherhood Research & Practice Network (FRPN) will host our 10th learning community webinar in early February. Inside the Black Box, Part 2: Fathers’ Attendance in Fatherhood Programs will take place on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. EST.

This webinar focuses on participant attendance in fatherhood programs. Practitioners will discuss rates of attendance, factors that affect it and methods of increasing it. Researchers will describe approaches to measuring attendance in fatherhood programs, the effects of attendance on fathers’ outcomes and future directions for studying it.

Validation Study of New FRPN Measure Published in January 2018 Edition of Journal of Family Issues

This study documents the development and initial validation of a new measure of decision-making responsibility for low-income fathers with a nonresident child. Focus groups conducted with 71 fathers revealed two dimensions of decision-making responsibility: making decisions with respect to direct care of the child and making decisions with respect to resources. Surveys were then collected from 542 nonresident fathers to validate a set of items measuring these two dimensions. The results of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis supported these factors.

However, the results of convergent and predictive validity tests suggest that the resources factor does not add additional explanatory power above its association with the care factor. The authors suggest using only the seven care decision-making items in future studies.

New Research Briefs from the National Research Center on Hispanic Children and Families

The National Research Center on Hispanic Children and Families has released five briefs on Latino fathers, couples, children and families. The Center is housed at Child Trends and is funded by the Office of Planning Research and Evaluation.

The briefs are: A Portrait of Latino Fathers: Strengths and Challenges; A Guide to Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood Programs for Hispanic Couples and Families; Family Structure and Family Formation Among Low-income Hispanics in the U.S.; A National Portrait of the Health and Education of Hispanic Boys and Young Men; The Complex and Varied Households of Low-income Hispanic Children.
